Galibier-Thabor

The Galibier-Thabor ski area is located in the Maurienne Valley within the Savoie region of the French Alps. It links the terrain of two main stations to provide 160 kilometers of interconnected slopes. The resort is highly regarded for its family-friendly environment but also provides extensive opportunities for alpine trekking and snowboarding across its varied peaks. Elevations start at 1,430 meters and reach a maximum height of 2,600 meters. Snow reliability is bolstered by the fact that 70 percent of the skiable terrain is positioned above 2,000 meters.

Every year the Valloire hosts the International Ice and Snow Sculpture Contests, a major winter event where artists from around the world create ice structures in the village's streets. Accessibility to the mountains is straightforward due to the proximity of the Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne train station, which is only 17 kilometers from the resort entrance. Travelers arriving by air typically land at Chambéry Airport, which is roughly 100 kilometers away and requires a transfer time of about one hour and fifteen minutes. Major hubs such as Lyon and Geneva are also viable options for international visitors, generally requiring a two-hour drive to reach the valley.

Valloire and Valmeinier are the two primary towns serving this expansive ski circuit. Valloire is a traditional mountain village situated at the base of the mountain pass that shares its name, while Valmeinier consists of two separate tiers including a modern high-altitude station. For those seeking the best selection of restaurants and a lively social scene after the lifts close, the lower historic village is the preferred choice. This area contains a high concentration of establishments serving regional Savoyard cuisine and several spots for drinks. While the higher-altitude station offers more immediate slope access, the historic village provides a more comprehensive range of evening activities and diverse dining experiences.
